Rock N Roll A Go-Go
The Darling Stilettos redefine sassy.
With four vibrant and vivacious personalities, the Los Angeles quartet is more like an all-girl superhero troupe than just another rock 'n' roll band. Ace, Krystal, Franky and Tiffany each have their own set of "powers" and persona, but they can all sing and dance to boot. Their music is fueled by the propulsive percussion of legendary Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum, making for a sound that's undeniable, unforgettable and uncontainable. Combining anthemic rock 'n' roll and explosive burlesque dancing, this quartet has got the goods to shake rock music to its very core.
Frontwoman Ace describes The Stilettos' enigmatic style best. "It's a modern take on old school rock. Rock 'n' roll and dance have always gone hand-in-hand. Every frontman is really a dancer—from Iggy Pop to Axl Rose—they're just not trained though. We take those classic moves and put our own spin on them as a group."
This group is more like a "rock 'n' dance" gang. Formed in 2008, The Darling Stilettos quickly left their mark on the Los Angeles scene and beyond. They've supported all-star jam band Camp Freddy at two month-long sold out Roxy residencies, and they've transported a little Sunset Strip style to Las Vegas on numerous occasions. Crowds remain transfixed by their combination of swagger, style and soul. No one is doing what these four girls are doing right now either.
"I feel like we're filling a void," says Ace. "The Runaways did it; and they did it right. However, nobody has mixed dance and rock the way that we have. We've got a genuinely visual show."
You really have to see it to believe it. Burlesque movements and ballsy rock converge seamlessly for The Stilettos. It's classy and sexy, but it also flips a middle finger to convention.
Krystal adds, "I really like the burlesque vibe. It's sexy and it's rock 'n' roll. People will love watching it but they can also connect with it."
There's no doubt that audience will connect with each girl for different reasons. The Darling Stilettos have gone through a few incarnations, but now they're a fabulous force all their own. Franky adds a Latin fire and sharp sense of humor—she's even got a B.S. in Biology from Loyola Marymount. At the same time, Krystal is hypnotic, channeling a classic pinup aesthetic but with a modern sensitivity. Then Tiffany adds flavor right from The Philippines.
"These girls are such individual women," explains Ace. "That really comes across on stage. They all have something to say and they know who they are. We're four strong individuals with a voice."
Tiffany concurs, "Everyone does their part making the group a whole. We all have our alter-egos that come out, but we balance each other well."
Those alter egos truly run wild on original Stilettos songs like "Rock 'N' Roll A-Go-Go" and "So Rock 'N' Roll." These are the kinds of songs that could work in a dance club or a packed arena because there's always a fist-pumping hook and a whole lot of attitude. The group's forthcoming collaboration with Paul Oakenfold "Do You Wanna Touch" shows another side of the Stilettos as well.
Ace continues, "Starting out, a lot of our beats had an anthemic feel like classic rock songs. Now, we're adding the dance element into it with sub bass and electronics. The sound is becoming a hybrid of the two."
Another new song "Won't Be Your Bitch" is the ultimate female empowerment track with no shortage of contemporary grit and gusto. All of the girls are focused on changing rock music forever, and you can be sure they'll do it their way.
Franky declares, "We have a camaraderie girls can relate to. We also have a lot to say, and I think we can be role models."
Producer/drummer/songwriter Sorum guides the ship, helping The Stilettos attain that one-of-a-kind vision. About Matt, Tiffany exclaims, "He's an amazing mentor. He shares his wisdom with us and it's really an honor."
Girls everywhere can have a favorite Stiletto, but they'll most likely love all of them—as will you. Ace concludes, "I want our fans to listen to our songs and feel like they can accomplish anything. I want audiences at our shows to escape into what we're doing for that hour we're on stage. I really hope they walk out feeling like they can accomplish anything."
That's what all great rock 'n' roll does. It kicks you in the ass and pushes you forward. This time that kick is going to come from The Darling Stilettos…— Rick Florino, August 2010
